We have lot's of computers at home. A total of 8 are usually powered up, interconnected via a household network (Ethernet), and connected to the Internet via a firewall PC and a 24-hour Roadrunner cable modem link. A PC in the kitchen answers the telephone, takes FAXs, collects our email, controls our lights (X-10), and browses the Web. (Firefox). We have two Connectix cameras (one color, one monochrome) which double as burglar-alarms when we are away. Besides in the kitchen, we have wired Internet access in the living room, the bedrooms, the den, and garage, and back deck. A wireless link (to the beach!) was on the list of things to do real soon now (amateur packet radio), but WiFi has made that unnecessary. Over the years we've run Microsoft WFW, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows XP, Linux, SunOS, and HP-UX. Today we mostly stick with Linux and Windows XP. Most of the pictures you find here were taken with either a Epson PhotoPC digital camera (640x480) or an Olympus D-400Z digital camera (1280x960).

We like to go tent/car camping the desert...all year round. In and around Anza-Borrego State Park is our favorite desert destination. It's about 2 hours due east of La Jolla. We usually go camping with a small group of friends. We all happen to have yellow VW's...and a Web page .

In the summer of 1998 we received five visitors from Guam: David, Roseann, Beth, Risa and Jonathan Ahlgren, our cousins/nieces/nephews, ranging in age from 4 to 16 years old. We have pictures from the day they arrived in San Diego. David returned to Guam at the beginning of October. The rest of the children stayed with us past the summer. With school, soccer, and Girl Scouts, we used to be a very busy family of eight.

Currently we have three (live) pets staying with us: a golden retriever named Cooper (born March 3, 1997), a Staffordshire terrier named Samson, a three-legged "Guamanian Boonie Dog" named BeeBee, a stray Siamese cat named Edelbrock, a "store-bought" black cat named Beltain, and one dead pet, a frozen goldfish named Goldie, which lived to a ripe old age of 11. Goldie has had her own home page for many years now. Not to be left out, John has made Cooper his own Web Page.

We've chronicled several family vacations using the digital camera and the Web:

• 1996 National Parks Tour - The summer of 1996 the Lightner's took a three-week driving adventure to visit Minnesota/Wisconsin and parts in between. During the adventure, we made a daily trip report...complete with pictures.

• 1997 Duluth/North Woods - The summer of 1997 Bruce and Evie visited the "Duluth Lightners" and spent a week in Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin with "the guys". A daily log with pictures resulted.

• 1997 Colorado - In October 1997 we took a four-day driving trip to Bailey, CO for a memorial service for Grandpa Dee Lightner. A "clickable" photo collage contains the raw images from the trip, where we met lots of Lightners...many for the first time.

• 1998 Duluth/North Woods - An eight-day road trip in the summer of 1998 when Evie, Roseann and Beth visited the "Duluth Lightners" and Bruce once again spent time in Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin with "the guys". Another daily log with pictures resulted.
