The Street Poker Run was held on the back roads of San Diego County on a beautiful late summer weekend. The club decided stick to the picturesque country of Pauma Valley, Palomar, Santa Isabel, Julian, and Banner rather attempt the downtown San Diego street rallye of last year.
People arrived during the day on friday and enjoyed a campfire with music by Bob Danske ("the Hedgehog") and accompanied by Bruce Meyers.
The next morning we set off on our street run and learned how to drive in a "Poker Run". Before the run on Saturday, participants were given the opportunity to contribute to the poker prize that was to be awarded the next morning. During the day, several stops were made to participate in games that earned points for prizes. At each stop a card was drawn from a deck playing cards. The card drawn was recorded with the game points.
The first game had us fishing with our hand in a large jar of popcorn to grab tokens of various point values.
The second game involved some skill in throwing darts. Each passenger was given several darts that had to be thrown at a target (a picture of a jeep) as the buggy was driven by.
A barbeque beef lunch was served after driving through Julian and stopping in Banner. The lunch was followed by a new game that was the most fun of the entire day. Bruce built a huge "Teeter-Totter" that could support a dune buggy. The object was to drive up one side of the teeter-totter and stop exactly at the balance point. Out of about 90 buggies, only four managed to balance for the mandatory 10 seconds.
On the way back to the campgrounds we came to a gravel yard next to the highway where our last game of the day was held. The gravel yard was smoothe and flat except for a couple of high piles gravel. There was a course set through the gravel yard that we were to traverse as quickly as possible. But, there were also bean bags that had to be thrown through the mouth of a clown that was painted on a plywood board. It was very tricky to make a good time through the course. If you spun your wheels too much your time would be slow. If you went too fast, you could not get any points with the bean bags.
On Sunday we had a continental brakfast and took a morning drive up over Mount Palomar and back.
